If you’re building or renovating in Katy, your smart home network is the invisible foundation everything else depends on. Grizzly Tec designs and installs enterprise-grade networking—structured wiring, managed switches, and commercial WiFi—so your home automation, security cameras, and smart devices work reliably. As a LOXONE Partner since 2015, we’ve completed over 1,000 projects across the Houston metro, and we know exactly what Katy’s large suburban homes need to stay connected.

Why Katy Homeowners Choose This

Katy homes are big. Whether you’re in Cinco Ranch, Cross Creek Ranch, or Firethorne, your home likely spans 3,000+ square feet with multiple stories and wings. WiFi from a single router in the entryway won’t cut it. Dead zones in the master suite, garage, or guest house mean dropped video calls, streaming buffering, and—most critically—your smart home system losing connection to key devices.

That western exposure you get in Katy also means strong sun and heat, which makes proper network rack ventilation and strategic access-point placement non-negotiable. We’ve found that homes with 50 or more connected devices (cameras, locks, thermostats, lighting, audio speakers, motorized shades) benefit dramatically from a managed switch that prioritizes traffic. A generic WiFi mesh system can’t handle that load reliably.

When you start new construction, the framing stage is your one chance to run Cat6a cabling through walls and drop fiber backbones before drywall seals everything shut. Retrofit wiring is exponentially more expensive. Same principle applies to large remodels. If you’re already opening walls, run the cabling now.

What’s Included with Networking

Our networking service covers the full stack:

Structured Wiring: Cat6a runs to every room you specify—living areas, bedrooms, outdoor patio, garage, media closet. Fiber backbone for future-proofing if needed. Proper termination in a labeled patch panel, not loose cables.

Network Equipment: Managed PoE switches (Power over Ethernet, so one cable powers and connects devices like cameras and access points). Commercial-grade WiFi access points positioned for even coverage. We choose hardware designed to handle dozens of simultaneous connections without degradation.

Network Rack & Ventilation: A dedicated, properly organized rack in your utility closet or garage houses your modem, switches, routers, and automation controller. Ventilation keeps equipment cool, especially in Katy’s heat.

Installation & Configuration: We run cabling, terminate connections, configure switches and access points, and test coverage. You get your full admin password—no monthly fee, no cloud lock-in. Your home, your network, your control.

We often pair networking with whole-home automation because a rock-solid network is the prerequisite. Motorized shades, lighting control, and security cameras all need reliable connectivity to respond when you tap a button or ask your voice assistant.

Project Examples in Katy

Cinco Ranch New Construction (3,500 sq ft colonial): Family planning smart home features during framing. We ran Cat6a to the garage for future EV charger, to the outdoor kitchen patio, and to each bedroom and living area. Fiber backbone future-proofs for smart irrigation and outdoor lighting. Four WiFi access points positioned to eliminate coverage gaps across two stories. Total wired run: 800+ feet of cabling.

Cross Creek Ranch Renovation (3,200 sq ft): Kitchen and master suite remodel with open floor plan. Dead zones in the kitchen island and guest bedroom were killing WiFi signal. We added two access points during construction, ran Cat6a for future wired devices, and installed a managed switch to separate streaming video traffic from home security cameras.

Firethorne Smart Expansion: Homeowner added a guest house 150 feet from the main residence. Rather than extend WiFi over distance (unreliable), we buried conduit and ran fiber and backup Cat6a. Guest house gets dedicated access point tied to the main network but controlled separately if needed.

Cost of Networking in Katy

Typical residential networking starts around $3,000 for a well-designed system in a 3,000+ square-foot home. This covers:

  • Materials: switches, access points, structured cabling, patch panels, rack
  • Labor: running cabling, termination, equipment setup, testing
  • Two access points for solid coverage (larger homes may need three or four)

Budget factors:

  • New construction during framing: lower cost because walls are open
  • Retrofit into finished home: higher cost because we fish cabling or surface-run it
  • Fiber backbone upgrade: adds $1,200–$2,000 but future-proofs for 20 years
  • Cable runs over 400 feet: longer runs increase material and labor

We’ll give you an honest quote based on your home layout and plan. No surprise change orders. Read more about smart home costs in our 2026 guide.

Every project comes with zero monthly fees and full admin access. You own the system outright. That’s part of our “Smart Homes You Actually Own” commitment—no rental fees, no cloud dependency, no surprises five years later.
