LOXONE vs Savant vs Control4: Smart Home Systems Compared (2026)

Comparisons 10 min read By Daniel Lopez

LOXONE, Savant, and Control4 are three of the most common professional smart home platforms installed in Houston-area homes. The key difference: LOXONE gives homeowners full admin access with no monthly fees, while Savant and Control4 require a dealer for most changes and often involve recurring costs. Here’s a fair, feature-by-feature comparison.

Choosing a smart home platform is one of the most consequential decisions you’ll make during a build or renovation. Unlike paint colors or countertops, your automation platform is deeply embedded in your home’s wiring and daily operation. Switching later is possible but expensive. This guide is designed to help Houston homeowners make that decision with clear information rather than marketing language.

We install LOXONE — we’ll be upfront about that. But we’ve worked with all three platforms over the years, and this comparison is based on real-world project experience, not spec sheets.

What Is LOXONE and Who Is It For?

LOXONE is a wired smart home platform built around a central computer called the Miniserver. Everything — lighting, climate, shading, audio, security — connects to the Miniserver through LOXONE’s Tree bus (wired) or Air protocol (wireless for retrofits). All processing happens locally in your home. No internet required for daily operation.

The defining feature of LOXONE is ownership. When your system is installed, you receive the admin password and full access to LOXONE Config — the same software your installer uses. You can rename rooms, adjust lighting scenes, create schedules, add new automations, or make any change you want. You can also hire any LOXONE-certified partner to service your system. There is no dealer lock-in.

LOXONE charges no monthly fees. There is no subscription tier, no “premium” unlock, no cloud dependency for core features. You buy the hardware, you own the system, and it runs independently in your home.

LOXONE is ideal for: Homeowners who value full control and ownership, new construction projects (where wired infrastructure is most cost-effective), LiteTouch and legacy system replacements, and anyone who wants a single platform for lighting, audio, climate, shading, and security without recurring costs.

LOXONE may not be ideal for: Homeowners who want an ultra-premium, Apple-centric aesthetic experience (Savant excels here), or those who prefer a large local dealer network for basic maintenance (Control4 has broader dealer coverage in some markets).

What Is Savant and Who Is It For?

Savant is a luxury smart home platform with strong ties to the Apple ecosystem. Founded in 2005, Savant has positioned itself as the premium choice for high-end residential automation. The hardware aesthetic is distinctly Apple-inspired — clean lines, brushed metal, and a beautiful iOS app.

Savant’s Pro Host is the central processor, similar in concept to LOXONE’s Miniserver. It handles automation logic and serves the Savant app. The system supports lighting, climate, shading, audio, and entertainment control.

Where Savant excels:

  • Visual design and UI. The Savant app and hardware are genuinely beautiful. If aesthetics and a premium feel are your top priority, Savant delivers.
  • Apple ecosystem integration. Savant plays exceptionally well with Apple devices, Apple TV, and the broader Apple Home environment.
  • Entertainment control. Savant’s media management and source control are among the best in the industry.

Where Savant falls short:

  • Dealer dependency. Programming changes require your Savant dealer. You cannot access the programming tools yourself. If your relationship with your dealer sours, or they go out of business, you’re in a difficult position.
  • Cost. Savant is consistently the most expensive option in this comparison. A whole-home Savant system can cost 50-100% more than a comparable LOXONE installation.
  • Recurring costs. Savant offers cloud services that may involve recurring fees depending on your configuration and dealer.

Savant is ideal for: Apple-centric households that prioritize luxury aesthetics and premium UI, homeowners who prefer a “white glove” dealer relationship and don’t need to make changes themselves, and budgets where cost is secondary to brand and design.

What Is Control4 and Who Is It For?

Control4 (now owned by Snap One) is one of the most widely installed professional smart home platforms in the United States. It has the largest dealer network of the three systems compared here, which means availability and service options are broad.

Control4 uses a mix of Zigbee wireless, IP, and serial connections to integrate lighting, climate, audio, video, and security. The system is programmed using Composer Pro — a dealer-only tool. Homeowners get access to a simplified version called Composer Express (previously Composer HE), which allows basic changes like adjusting favorites and rearranging the UI, but does not provide full programming access.

Where Control4 excels:

  • Dealer availability. With thousands of dealers across the US, finding a Control4 installer in Houston (or anywhere) is easy. This broad network means competitive pricing on installation and service.
  • Entertainment integration. Control4’s video distribution and source control are mature and well-supported, particularly for homes with multiple TVs and media zones.
  • Entry-level pricing. For basic automation needs, Control4 can be more affordable than Savant and competitive with LOXONE at the lower end.

Where Control4 falls short:

  • Dealer lock-in. Like Savant, you cannot fully program the system yourself. Composer Pro is dealer-only. Even relatively simple changes (adding a new device, modifying an automation sequence) require a dealer visit or remote session — often at a cost.
  • Recurring subscriptions. Control4’s 4Sight service ($100/year) is required for remote access, certain cloud features, and “When >> Then” automations. Without it, you lose meaningful functionality.
  • Snap One ownership concerns. Snap One’s acquisition of Control4 introduced uncertainty. Product direction, dealer program changes, and cloud service continuity are ongoing questions in the integrator community.

Control4 is ideal for: Homeowners who want broad dealer availability and easy access to service, entertainment-heavy homes with complex AV needs, and budgets seeking entry-level professional automation.

Who Really Controls Your Smart Home?

This is the question that matters most — and it’s the one most buyers don’t think about until it’s too late.

When you invest $15,000 to $80,000 in a smart home system, who actually owns it? Can you make changes without calling (and paying) someone? Can you switch service providers? Can you keep the system running if your dealer closes?

LOXONE: You get the admin password. You get free access to the same programming software your installer uses. You can change dealers at any time. If Grizzly Tec disappeared tomorrow, your system would continue operating and any LOXONE partner could service it. You own your system completely.

Savant: Your dealer holds the programming access. You can control your home through the app, but modifying automations, adding devices, or changing programming requires your dealer. Switching dealers is possible but can be complicated depending on how the original dealer configured the system.

Control4: Similar to Savant — the dealer controls programming. Composer Express gives you limited customization, but anything substantive requires Composer Pro and a dealer. The 4Sight subscription adds another layer of dependency.

Here’s a practical scenario: You want to change your “Good Morning” scene to turn on the kitchen lights 30 minutes earlier because your schedule changed.

  • LOXONE: Open LOXONE Config, adjust the schedule, save. Done in 2 minutes.
  • Savant: Call your dealer, explain the change, schedule a remote session or wait for the next visit. Cost: $50-$150 depending on the dealer.
  • Control4: Same as Savant — call the dealer, schedule the change, pay for the service.

Over 10-15 years of ownership, these small changes add up to thousands of dollars in service calls — or, more commonly, homeowners simply stop making changes and live with a system that doesn’t quite fit their life.

Which System Should You Choose?

There’s no universally “best” system — the right choice depends on your priorities. Here’s a framework:

Choose LOXONE if:

  • You want full ownership and the ability to make changes yourself
  • You value zero recurring fees and no cloud dependency
  • You’re building new or replacing a legacy system like LiteTouch
  • You want a single platform that handles lighting, audio, climate, shading, and security
  • Long-term cost of ownership matters to you

Choose Savant if:

  • Premium aesthetics and Apple ecosystem integration are your top priorities
  • You prefer a luxury “white glove” experience where your dealer handles everything
  • Budget is secondary to brand and design
  • Entertainment control with premium UI is a primary requirement

Choose Control4 if:

  • Broad dealer availability and easy access to service matter most
  • You have complex AV/entertainment needs across many zones
  • You’re comfortable with a subscription model for full functionality
  • Entry-level professional automation at a competitive price point appeals to you

Our Recommendation

We’re transparent about our position: Grizzly Tec is a LOXONE Gold Partner, and LOXONE is the platform we believe best serves Houston-area homeowners. The ownership model, the absence of recurring fees, and the ability for homeowners to control their own system align with how we think smart homes should work.

That said, we respect that Savant and Control4 serve different priorities, and we’d rather you make an informed choice on any platform than an uninformed choice on ours.

If ownership and long-term value matter to you, we’d welcome a conversation.
